EL NORTE

Design Team: Jaime Correa

A fictional proposal for the expansion of the School of Architecture of the University of Miami. The required program is incorporated into a quarter mile long bar building following the "true north" of the campus (El Norte). New jury rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, faculty offices, a student council center, a clubhouse, and a faculty lounge are placed within a bar structure ending on the south side of the campus lake. This single bar building, with its strict geometry, collides with the existing post-world-war residential structures currently used for school functions. The collision of the existing structures, and the rigorous discipline of the single bar building, produce a variety of courtyards in the tradition of the English college quadrangle – a recognized type among traditional American colleges since the beginning of the new republic.
